Where To Stay in Ubud Bali

This post is part of the massive resource: Ultimate Guide To Living In Bali

This article is about the 3 big areas in Ubud, why you should there and what to look out for.

Includes maps and directions.

My favourite areas in Bali (Ubud)

Here are Ubud’s three most popular areas to stay in (see the map below)

  1. BLUE: City Central Area AKA can’t ride a scooter to save my life AKA we like to partay area
  2. RED: South West Area: Penestanan/Sayan/Nyuh Kuning Area AKA starry eyed semi-permanents expecting rice fields and getting traffic jams instead
  3. GREEN: North Area: Tirta Tawar, Suweta Area AKA area where bules (westerners) build their own villas

1. Ubud Central Area (blue area)

Why stay in the Ubud Central area?

Ubud central is the most busy part of Ubud, filled with backpackers and tourists. If you like to party and be social. this is the place to be! Here you will find ‘happy hour drinks’ at nearly every restaurant and bars that open late.

You will also find Ubud markets and great shopping areas. This is a great area if you like to walk everywhere and don’t want to battle traffic on a scooter.

What’s bad about this area?
The Ubud central area is generally crowded with lots of traffic and noise. I recommend staying at one of the hotels away from the road as road noise can go on all night. Also wifi in the area is not as strong as outside central Ubud.

2. South West Area: Penestanan/Sayan/Nyuh Kuning Area (red area)
AKA starry eyed semi-permanents expecting rice fields and getting traffic jams instead

Why stay in the South West Area?
South West area boasts beautiful rice fields and expansive villas quiet enough to truly relax. You can carve yourself a great little spot with great fast internet.

A lot of expats live in this area. It has a coworking space for digital nomads and great restaurants.

What’s bad about this area?
The biggest problem with Penestanan is that you need to battle traffic for half an hour or drive the back way for over 15 minutes in order to get to the central area. It’s not convenient like other areas. Another problem is that a lot of villas in this area require you to drive through narrow pathways in between rice field that make it difficult to navigate, especially at night. Also be aware of monkeys in the Nyuh Kuning Area.

Some people will be upset that I lumped Penestanan and Nyuh Kuning together. They swear by these areas having very different cultures. I haven’t seen it much different personally.

3. North Area: Tirta Tawar, Suweta Area (green area)
AKA area where lots of bules (westerners) build their own villas

Why stay in the North Area?
North area has great rice field views. A lot of expats living here for years settle in this area. It also has fast internet in most areas and is quiet enough to enjoy some fabulous views.

What’s bad about this area?
There have been reports of a few muggings, specifically on Jalan Tirta Tawar late at night. A man with a red scarf over his mouth drives next to an expat and grabs their bag. I haven’t heard of any muggings in recent months but it’s a good idea to keep your bag in front of you instead of your back when driving in this area at night.
